This thing is a piece of crap. Leaks when the cap goes on, spills when it pours. Just filled it up. My car smells like gas, my hands smells like gas and I’m mad. Then it spilled while filling my mower and my shop smells like gas. Does anyone know of a 2-gallon-ish gas can that doesn't totally suck?

These are the best of the new bunch I’ve come across.
*puts on cospiracy theory hat*
I’m certain gas can manufacturers lined someone’s pocket to ban the old vented cans that worked perfectly.

I can’t recommend any other better ones, because I have 2 of the same style in 1 gallon-ish and 5 gallon-ish sizes...but one thing that no one should ever do under any circumstance, because it would be defeating a safety feature, is to take the cap/spout off, and flip it over, take a screwdriver and pry that lock tab thingy off. Sure, it might make it much easier to use so you’re not trying to futz with that while simultaneously trying to tip the can and press the handle down to start the flow, but one should never do it because it would be defeating a safety feature.

woah, what are these crazy contraptions? we just have a regular plastic spout on ours.
Do they not trust you to pour petrol without spilling it?

Yeah I just snapped the tab off mine, works great. The other one I have has a twist unlock, then a tab on the spout. So you catch the tab on something, then twist the lock and press down. I broke the twist lock, so now you just press the neck-tab against something and pour away. works great.
***grumble grumble back in my day you just poured the gas out of the fucking thing***

Yeah we use old-school metal cans at work for all of our tools/utilities vehicles/generators and they are awesome. But I haven't seen any less than 5 US gallons. I suppose I could just not fill it the whole way, but I really don't want it taking up the space on the shelf - I already have 3 cans because I have two 2-stroke motors that take different mix ratios in addition to the 4-stroke stuff.

That’s how they used to be in the US too, but these days they all seem to have some no-spill feature. I blame California. Oh and - spoiler alert - they still spill anyway!

Redneck engineer a non-safety spout. Those things are so good at protecting you from the gasoline, they defeat the purpose of a spout.

I’ve considered it... the problem is that the can itself seems to leak like magic even when you aren’t pouring. I think it’s somewhere along the seem that only shows up after the can pressurizes.

These are pretty great. Solid seals, well made and even their carb spouts aren’t bad

These look pretty awesome. But since I’m just filling mowers, rescuing friends, and occasionally bringing along an emergency top-up in the desert, I think $80 is a bit steep. Makes me want to turn the Outback into some sort of “lite” adventure rig and venture a bit further off of the beaten path in NM and AZ at some point though.

Whats great about these is that (so long as you don’t spill on the outside) they seal well enough to leave in the car...no need to mount them...and they don’t stink up the place. Every now and again they sell them blemished on the site for half off, keep an eye on it.

One detriment that I’ve been told a that the metal cans are more prone to collecting condensation and thus dripping that into the fuel. With the ethanol absorbing it then results in the fuel going bad quicker

exactly - I have two cans with completely different “no spill” contraptions and both work like sh!t and always spill all over even when vented...

I’ve had good Blitz containers and bad ones. Notably, my pre-CARB ones have never leaked or smelled. However, it’s not just the spouts, though that’s surely part of the issue. The body of the can hasn’t changed, which means they’re using the same injection molds for nearly 20 years now. They do wear and get sloppier tolerances, which could easily contribute to a bad seal around the cap/spout assembly (which is the only new part). Maybe some quality obsessive time with a Dremel to get the cap/spout assembly to seal? I haven’t seen any new alternatives I like, and old cans are hard to find for sale; seems most people just throw them out.

I have the same can, can confirm.
I fully expect one of these days I’ll go to use it, and the lever on the spout will snap off.

Ooo. Okay, this has my attention. I need to build a trailer with multiple uses behind multiple vehicles, one of which is “track day” configuration to tow behind my Z with tires, tools, gasoline, and a cooler. A couple of those in a modular rack that quick dismounts from the trailer would be solid gold. Thanks for the info!

Mil specter 5gal here.. It rides under the canopy and doesn’t stink. As long as you get the bigger pour spout for it it goes in super fast.
Mower gets a little 5gal red one- but I’m Canadian so they let me use the old style spout, eh.

4 gallons sounds about right. More than that can be a pain to lift and pour without making a mess (it is restored, so...). And the gas I intend on transporting to the track is 107 or 110 octane at almost $9/gallon here, so best not to get tempted in to getting too much at once (“Well, the tanks were empty, so...”). :) Thanks again!

I mean, since there is no actual requirement for upgrading, I don’t see what the manufacturers stand to gain. In fact, it probably hurt their profits a bit, since they had to redesign their cans.

I bought one for my generator a year or so ago and it too blows.
Seriously, they weren’t ALWAYS bad, just the new spouts that are required on them pretty much guarantee spillage

I really like the No-Spill can that I’ve got. I’ve got a 5 gallon, and it looks like they are available in everything from 1.25 gallon size on up.

Yep , those suck. I have a 5 gallon one that does all the wrong things you mentioned. When I use it I just have it for storage only. I transfer gas from it into one of two old style fuel cans I own that don’t suck. At least with the other two I can fill anything without spilling 4 oz of fuel in the process. I have one of those small Harbor Freight bulb type siphons that I transfer the gas with. Its the only spill-proof way. Takes forever and you have to keep an eye on the other can if it smaller so you don’t overfill.

You can always buy a ‘water’ can spout on Amazon . I changed mine out a while ago and now don’t smell like gas every time I try to fill a mower.

Pretty much same story here - I bought the Blitz because I had an old one that had been fine for many years and eventually started to leak. The new one has from the get-go. I could go to town with the Dremel, but I was hoping there might be something that just worked.

I’ve never heard that, but it does make sense... I would think with a good seal though that the only moisture to go in would be whatever was in the air when you filled it. But yes with Ethanol this becomes a concern.

I’ve had the 5 gallon version for over a year now and no leaks to be seen. The spout is actually pretty nice, I rest the can on the fender of the mower with the spout in the tank and then press the button to start pouring.

I still want a better can (probably gonna buy the No Spill) but that's not a bad idea. I have a funnel for oil changes sitting right there.
